  • Posted @withregram • @tbafund We’ve seen a lot of people thinking 6 weeks is currently in effect and we just want to squash that!! Right now in Florida Abortion is still legal up to 15 weeks! The case still needs to go to the Florida Supreme Court and if the outcome is 6 weeks it will take another 30 days for it to become a law. So at this time it’s looking like it could be sometime in July/Aug maybe even September but is unknown right now. We will be sure to keep everyone up to date when this does happen. But for now… ABORTION IS LEGAL UP TO FIFTEEN WEEKS IN FLORIDA. And TBAF is here to help our community get the abortion access they deserve.

  • Trust that birthing people are the experts in their own life and trust them to own their critical thinking and to make decisions they deem right for them in accordance with their beliefs, including their perception of risk. Birthing people also make decisions irrespective of evidence or even when they have a lack of information or knowledge.
Shared decision making is system control in softer language. It detracts from who ultimately owns the right to agency, autonomy and informed consent and centers protection of the system and the workers within it. Focus on teaching birthing people to hold their power within the system and it’s relationships - that’s where change happens 🔥

Posted @withregram • @drsarawickham I really take issue with the use of the term 'shared decision-making' in medical circles.

I have long talked about how evidence and decisions are two different things, and how we need to take care when we discuss these.

Professionals (and sometimes birth workers) share evidence.

Women and families make decisions.

As much as I love that there are brilliant, kind and woman-centred midwives, doctors, doulas and other birth workers out there who do everything they can to facilitate women and their families being able to make the decisions that are right for them, we need to ensure that the language we use clearly differentiates the different elements of this.

Information, education and the sharing of evidence are a vital part of our role, but it is not for professionals to lay claim to participation in the decision-making of those who need to live with the consequences.

This means, as I have long ranted, ensuring that we talk about evidence separately from decision-making, reminding ourselves that, as important as it is, evidence is not the only thing that informs decisions and, perhaps most importantly of all, never forgetting that it is women who make the decisions about their care.

If you'd like to read more about this, my blog post today discusses this topic, and shares a couple of the papers that have influenced my own thinking in this area.

  • Such a great time at the opening of the new and really lovely premises for @atlastchiropractic - it’s so great to work in community with you Dr Carissa! If you live in the Valrico, Fishhawk, Riverview and surrounding areas, and are looking for excellent chiropractic care during pregnancy, postpartum and for your newborn, I can’t recommend @atlastchiropractic highly enough! 😁

  • Interesting observation - there has been so much energy invested by doulas to be viewed as “essential members of the care team” (that’s a whole conversation of its own), so why is it that social media is over run with doulas engaging in behavior that breaks down, instead of builds, relationships with care providers? 🤔

I’ll say it again - birthing people want a relationship (of some kind) with their care providers and they do not need doulas to sabotage it 🤷🏻‍♀️
